Sung in Italian with Italian and English surtitles
Duration: 3 hours with intermission
After the first victories of Napoleon during the first military campaign in Italy, in 1789 the French troops had occupied Rome and declared the Republic; but as Napoleon was moving away towards the Egyptian offensive, the French military garrison was thrown out of Rome by Ferdinando Borbone IV’s Neapolitan army, which destroyed the Republic and its exponents. Tosca is based on this historical plot, that right from the start met the approval of the public, fascinated by the sensual warmth and vitality of the two protagonists: Tosca and Cavaradossi. Rich in strong-hearted scenic effects, in realistic details and in basic passions expressed through dynamic motifs and impetuous melodies, the opera disoriented a part of the critique, which was impressed by the uncontrolled realism showing every kind of torture and murder, as in the scene of the execution or, even more, in the of killing of Scarpia at the hand of Tosca. Forgotten the petty-bourgeois intimism of Bohème, Puccini constructs the work around the negative figure of Scarpia and creates a score rich in dynamic nuances with frequent indications of piano and pianissimo to the orchestra and a frequent use of ‘recurring motifs’, that is those melodies attributable to the protagonists.
