Considered by Massimo Mila the Italian Tristan for its despairing focus on the loving component, Un ballo in maschera was originally composed by Verdi to debut at Teatro di San Carlo. However, the Bourbon censorship rejected it because the subject was considered an extremely offensive theme. During a political scene shaken by revolts of the Risorgimento, putting on stage the murder of a sovereign was not permitted despite the fact that it was a consequence of rivalry in love. The edition of Ballo proposed for this Season follows the Swedish setting of Scribe’s drama and Leo Muscato, in his interpretation, sets it at the end of the 18th century. The story takes place in a fairy tale context where many of the archetypes of tales are summarized: the king in love, the witch, the court, the masked ball, the conspiracy, the entertaining page… All this is narrated through the wise lens of fiction in order to make the human and painful story of the characters real and engaging. Moreover, the narration is able to cause a feeling of sorrowful nostalgia that grips us when we remember moments of our past or, more in general, we are persuaded to meditate on the meaning of our own life.
