“Either I made a terrible mistake, or my opera is a masterpiece”: so, wrote the composer to the author of the libretto, his brother Modest Tchaikovsky being surprised and satisfied for the unexpected creative impulse. Indeed, La Dama di Picche was carried out at an incredible pace within a little more than a month at the beginning of 1890 and it repeated the great success of Eugenio Onieghin (1878), also taken from a Puškin story. The Tchaikovsky brothers deeply reworked the original text. This is the disturbing story of an obsession, a fixed idea, at the heart of the plot there is instead the character of German, who becomes the man of destiny for two women: Liza, carried away by his passion and the Countess, feeling in him and in his fiery look an evil and destructive desire. Musically speaking, it is an extraordinarily compact and cohesive opera, where technical perfection and expressive variation blend, the two poles of the music of Tchaikovsky, an educated and talented composer with a western styled technical background.
