For many years the Teatro San Carlo, as with the most important theatres in the world, has celebrated Christmas with The Nutcracker - the most famous ballet performed during the holidays - a ballet which continues to enchant adults and children. Based on the story by Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann, The Nutcracker and the king of mice, the story of Clara and The Nutcracker - who will become her prince - unfolds in a magical and fairy-tale atmosphere, where anything can happen. Tchaikovsky’s splendid music exalts the imaginative choreography of Lev Ivanov - assistant of Marius Petipa, elderly and ill – an artist of rare sensitivity. Also called the waltz ballet, from that of the snowflakes to the waltz of the flowers to the final apotheosis, there are moments of grande danza such as the conclusive Pas de deux, wrapped in poignant music, and unforgettable songs like the battle of mice and toy soldiers or the divertissement of the second act which includes Spanish, Arabic, Russian, Chinese and pastoral dance. The Nutcracker somehow anticipates the psychological ballet of the twentieth century. Such a ballet could not fail to inspire numerous versions including that of George Balanchine (1954), Rudolf Nureyev (1968), John Neumeier (1971), Roland Petit (1973), Mark Morris (1991), up to that of Maurice Béjart (1998).
