A brave, scandalous and revolutionary opera. Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District – in spite of the great success of its debut - in 1936 was severely condemned by Pravda that defined it “chaos more than music”. It is not a coincidence that, just few days before this publishing, Stalin saw the opera and abandoned the Theatre before the end. As a consequence, Lady Macbeth… disappeared from the Soviet Russian programs and Shostakovich was forced to modify both his libretto and his score. Only in 1979, four years after Shostakovich’s death, Mistislav Rostropovich succeeded in putting again Lady Macbeth… on scene in its original version.
