Schikaneder, brother in the Freemasonry of Mozart, had recently opened the theatre Auf der Wieden, where more especially Singspiele were performed, that is not entirely musical actions but including both spoken and vocal parts. In the hands of Mozart, the libretto (actually, rather conventional, with alternating comic and dramatic scenes) got a new life, becoming a fairy-tale ritual of initiation, where the events of the protagonists assume an unexpected meaning. All the scenic and musical events occurring in the opera follow theatrical dynamics, freed by a pressing and unitary logic. Composed in his spare time while composing La Clemenza di Tito, Il Flauto Magico was recognised, since the beginning, as an absolute masterpiece. Salieri, Mozart’s main antagonist, defined it an opera worthy of being performed on the main festivities and Goethe considered it the only music which could have fulfilled the notes of his Faust. This opera consists of all the main stylistic and rational elements of the operatic music in the 18^th century, blended in a dramatic-musical unity full of symbolic meanings and which would be the model for the German romantic opera.
