Sung in Italian with Italian and English surtitles

Duration: 4 hours with intermission

After the beauty of Sonnambula and Norma, it seemed impossible to write another masterpiece; yet the Puritani consists of pages of absolute inspiration and show happy melodic ideas and moments of expansive sentimentalism, typically Italian. Bellini seems to be oriented towards routes more open to the influences of the romantic aesthetics, without giving up his unique melodic lyricism. Despite the fictional and warlike background, this opera has its own elegiac colour which reveals itself with the folly of Elvira and the passion of Arturo. The original drama, though intricate and complicated, offered a great number of theatrical situations which fascinated the composer and the librettist; in particular, the heroic-patriotic topic, the ones of love and folly.  The orchestra is the great protagonist of the opera, which takes a more expressive tone than the previous operas, both in the preludes and the harmony, the colours and the mixings of timbre. The composer uses thematic references systematically, the way it was at the French theatre, and typical devices of the grand opera such as the magnificent collective historical scenes or the use of sounds off stage, meant to create evocative spatial effects.
