A masterpiece of world literature Don Quixote of La Mancha, written by Miguel de Cervantes, began to fascinate the world of ballet in the first half of the eighteenth century. Idealist and dreamer, comic and heroic, sentimental and reckless, he is the last heir of a chivalric world that no longer exists.

Don Quixote is one of the great masterpieces of the classical repertoire, a firework of virtuosity, expressiveness, technical sparkle. Marius Petipa, a great French maître de ballet at the Tsar’s court, created two versions of the ballet: the first for the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow (1869) and the second for the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg (1871). This second prevailed for the extraordinary and imaginative variety of steps, the rigorous symmetries of the "white act" (the scene of Don Quixote’s dream) and the famous final Pas de deux, point of arrival for expert dancers.

The version, to say the least spectacular, with Mikhail Baryshnikov, unsurpassable protagonist accompanying Cynthia Harvey with the company of the American Ballet Theatre, has toured around the world. At the Teatro San Carlo Rudolf Nureyev’s version was staged in 1982 (created in 1966 for the Vienna Opera) and still left its mark. The sparkling edition of Aleksej Fadeečev (from the original by Marius Petipa), performed at the Teatro San Carlo five years ago with Svetlana Zakharova, returns to enchant with its sunny, cheerful, entertaining and great choreographic beauty.
