The Spain created by Bizet is, even before a geographical place (never visited by the author), the place of human psychology, of passion and instinct, of primary conflicts: Love and Hate, Freedom and Relationships, Male and Female. And it is in these dualisms, in this double connotation that the universality of the work and the two characters of Don José and Carmen must be sought. Unfortunately, this psychological complexity is rarely highlighted in the current theatrical practice. Actually, the wandering and rapacious gypsy is preferred to the Lucifer character hiding in the protagonist. In defining the colour of Spain, Bizet does not start from the true and the proper folklore, but from Spanish music. The composer takes up only some rhythm (a Habanera and a Seguidilla). The ‘Spaniardism’ of Carmen is not a pure colour, on the contrary it exercises a precise dramatic function and even sets an environmental realism that directs all the work on a plan whose relationship with reality is much more direct and immediate than that which the history of opera has ever experienced.
