History

The origin

Theatre of San Carlo was built in 1737 by King Charles of Bourbon who wished to give his city a new theatre to symbolize the royal power.

Comic Opera

In 1730, the financial problems of Georg Friedrich Haendel began to worsen due to the extraordinary success of John Gay's The Beggar's Opera.

The Neapolitans

On 1 August 1752 the Theatre scheduled La Serva Padrona by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi. The success was unprecedented.

Baroque Opera

Besides the operatic repertoire, the Theatre has been working towards the recovery of 18th century Neapolitan comic operas.
