Giuseppe Verdi’s decision to give up operatic composition has held firm until a chance meeting with Bartolommeo Merelli, impresario at La Scala, obliges him to consider a libretto called Nabucco written by Temistocle Solera. He walks home with it, but, along the way, a strange feeling moves him. Once at home, he crashes the libretto on a table and it accidentally opens on a page where he reads “Và, pensiero, sull’ali dorate…”. The rest is eternal music.
