Duration: about 3 hours with intermission

The clamorous fiasco of the Opening Night (Madama Butterfly in two acts was on stage at Scala the 17th February 1904) was due to the innovation in line with the recent developments of the European musical theatre. Despite that, Puccini wrote to his friend: “With sad but strong soul I want tell you that was a real lynching… but my Butterfly remains along this line, the most sincere and emotional opera I have ever conceived”. For the new production of this great opera of the little things, Teatro di San Carlo has chosen the gaze of Ferzan Ozpetek who comes back to Naples after the success of La Traviata (at the theatre) and Napoli Velata (at the cinema). The opera focuses on the man as he occurs in the cinema of the Turkish director. And what about the music? Ozpetek affirms: «It is the language of the inexpressible and unexpressed, it says the unsaid. The music redeems characters; it is a beauty that sublimates. Also in cinema the music is as essential as the silence. The density of moods is fluid as the water passes through different states. We move only when our soul advances with the emotions of characters. I like to think that what stays out the framing does not get lost into thin air. You can say also without saying. The reality of cinema is beyond the image, it shoots the fluid dynamics of interiority».
