In the middle of the XIXth century, the opera buffa, after two centuries, enters a period of decadence. The young composer Nicola De Giosa, in collaboration with the librettist Almerindo Spadetta, an important figure in the world of Neapolitan theatre, composes an opera, which is a compendium of all the opere buffe. Don Checco is an opera buffa, which makes fun of this musical genre and of itself. The protagonists of this amusing score seem to be caricatures of many famous characters that everybody can recognize.
