The inauguration of Così fan tutte marks the return of Riccardo Muti to the direction of an opera at Teatro di San Carlo. This new co-production sees involved – for the first time together – Naples and Vienna and ties again a precious, cultural thread between the two cities, both capitals of music since the days of Mozart. In the order of composition, Così fan tutte is the last opera of the Mozart-Da Ponte Trilogy and it is a symmetrical game that dissembles its own truth and message as every good joke. In the best architecture of the ‘dramma giocoso’, the story and the orchestral, shiny colours hold on the architrave of a satiric and playful spirit ready to deconsecrate every feeling and impression raised.  The city of Naples of the 18th century is the perfect frame of contradictions where, for a joke, two young couples of lovers oppose and exchange each other finding themselves unbelievably satisfied. It could not be a more mozartian title as “Neapolitan” as Così fan tutte for the return to San Carlo of Maestro Muti who has always been a star witness of the Neapolitan culture in the world and, above all, of the music of the Neapolitan School which was brought to the attention of international academics and followers.
